Sustainable Grounds Maintenance depends upon knowledge and respect for natural cycles and relationships and recognition of the need to minimise all of our carbon footprints through improved management practices, less use of harmful herbicides and pesticides in favour of more natural solutions whenever possible. In 2006 Burleys gained ISO 14001: 2004 – Environmental in recognition of the measures we have put in place to minimise our own detrimental impact which has formed the basis of our environmental Integrated Management System.

Not content with having gained ISO 14001 Burleys has recently installed Environmental Software with the ability to plan the shortest routes and monitor our efficiency as well as measuring our carbon footprint enabling us to not only benchmark our own services but being able to meet clients reporting objectives such as NI185.

Carbon FootprintBurleys continues to look at innovative solutions to reducing our impact on the environment such as zero emission power tools and our ‘Zero Carbon Community’ where with our improved carbon monitoring and community involvement we are able to neutralise the carbon footprint of our operations through carbon sequestration and improved operational efficiencies.

Company Innovation

Burleys pride themselves in minimising the intrusive side of the work they do. ‘Stealth’ is very much the watchword these days especially because most of the sites where the company plies its trade are sensitive in one way or another. It is very aware that in residential, work, and active leisure settings the sound of grass cutting machinery is not necessarily welcome. Burleys do a lot of school Grounds Maintenance where sensitivity to lessons and exams is a number one concern…. but Burleys make an extra effort to see that what they do is seen, but barely heard.

“We’re very keen to get everyone’s mindset away from petrol powered equipment. We have gone down the electric route for a number of clients already and have Modec zero-emission vehicles in our fleet.“

“We like to look at innovations in equipment and this summer we’ve been testing a new type of hedge trimmer that’s powered by a lithium battery. A lot of our grounds work these days involves keeping shrubs and hedges trimmed and traditionally this is quite a noisy job.”…says Giles

Burleys have ordered 20 of the zero emissions pellenc machines for the 2011 season.
